English in Dublin, Ireland
As the capital city of one of the most dynamic members of the EU, Dublin offers an exciting and enriching backdrop in which to improve your English. The city has a lot to offer on every level. The Irish National Museum and the Irish National Gallery offer fascinating looks into the long history of the island from the bronze age through the Celts until modern times while the world famous illuminated medieval Book of Kells can be viewed at Trinity College. The night life is not lacking, either: the strip of bars and restaurants known as Temple Bar is reputed throughout the English speaking world as one of the finest possible places to spend a night out.Dublin also offers a wonderful base from which to discover the rest of Ireland as almost all the roads and railways in the country radiate from this central hub. The magnificent Glendalough abbey ruins are just 45 minutes away and local commuter trains reach into the green rolling hills that for which Ireland is known.
Academics
There are 4 programs currently offered at our school in Dublin:- Semi-Intensive Course (20 hours per week): The aim of this course is to improve students' practical communicative skills in both oral and written capacities. There are generally 8 to 10 students per class and class sizes are capped at 14. The courses take place Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 1:15pm. Please note that beginner courses only begin on certain dates (see table).
- Intensive Course (26 hours per week): This course covers all of the material of the semi-intensive course and adds a further six hours of conversation classes in the afternoons. The conversation courses focus on improving the students' accent and pronunciation. There are generally 8 to 10 students per class and class sizes are capped at 14. The courses take place Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 1:15pm from 2:00 to 4:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
- Combined Course (20+5 hours per week):
This highly effective program consists of the semi-intensive course in the morning plus one hour of private instruction each afternoon. The private lessons are catered to the students needs and goals. - Exam Preparation Course: These 12-week courses are specifically designed to prepare students for the University of Cambridge Examinations. Preparatory courses for all three levels of the exam are offered. These courses are offered three times a year: from September till December, January to March, and March to June. Social Program
The school offers a weekly social programme for the students outside of class. We encourage our students to integrate in the Irish way of living and to take advantage of the historical heritage, the music and the literature this country has to offer. The programme offers:- The afternoons:
- Sporting activities at local clubs, including tennis, soccer, basketball, squash, badminton, volleyball, swimming, athletics, ping-pong, rugby, or bowling.
- Cultural activities, such as trips to the Irish National Museums, classes in Irish dances and "ceili" or Guided visits through Dublin.
- Possibility for horse riding (25€ per session).
- Daily movie.
- Evenings: Evening activities are organised approximately 2 times a week. Activities include evenings of Irish dance, theater, cinema, disco, and nights on the town.
- The weekends: We organise excursions every weekend. The excursions, which sometimes last 2 or 3 days, are optional and not included in the price. Participation must be booked beforehand.
Accommodation
Students are boarded in a standard host family. Accommodation includes bed, breakfast and evening meals. Accommodation is, naturally, included in the course price.Other Important Information
- Arrival possible every Sunday.
- Beginners: start of classes on 02/01, 05/02, 05/03, 02/04, 08/05, 05/06, 02/07, 07/08, 03/09, 01/10, 05/11/2007), return on Saturday after the last class.
- Complete school year or trimester: we advise to start 03/09, 17/09 of 24/09. In January classes start again 02 or 08/01/2007
- Holidays 2007: 01/01, 19/03, 09/04, 07/05, 04/06, 06/08, 29/10, 22/12->06/01/2008 included
