English in Malta - Youths

Malta is made up of a group of islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino.  The island of Gozo is home to the Ggantija temple, the world’s oldest freestanding structure. Because of its strategic location, Malta has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Arabs, Romans, the Knights of St. John, the French and the British, all of whom have left their mark on the islands.

Malta became a British colony in 1814 and went on to achieve independence in 1964.  Mediterranean culture is dominant in Malta, but 150 years of British rule left their mark.  English is still an official language, the Maltese drive on the left side of the road and enjoy a nice English breakfast.  The most popular daily newspaper is the Malta Times which is published in English.

Malta has something for everyone: Mediterranean climate, crystal-clear waters, an abundance of history, pretty villages, colorful feasts and celebrations.  Malta also offers wonderful cafes and restaurants, a lively nightlife, a wide range of shops and, of course, English classes.

The School

Our partner school in Malta is a leading English language school with more than 8,000 students from many different nationalities attending each year - guaranteeing the ideal international language learning environment.

The school offers a vibrant year-round center for adults (18+) in Sliema and a popular teenager program (13 to 18 yrs) just 10 minutes away, close to Sliema Harbour.  Located just 3 miles from the historical capital of Valletta and half an hour drive from the international airport, Sliema is a cosmopolitan seaside resort. The school is located close to the promenade, so why not join the locals as they enjoy the daily evening stroll around the bay to lively St Julian’s and its multitude of restaurants, bars, roadside cafes and discos! This program has very been popular among our students for several years and is designed to satisfy the needs of teenage students from all parts of the globe.    Participants must at least have one year of previous English classes at school before entering this course.  The program consists of not only English lessons, but afternoon and evening activities and excursions as well.

In the morning, students have classes from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM in groups of up to 12.  Courses start every Monday and Thursday and arrivals are every Saturday/Sunday and Wednesday before the start of each course.  All students will be picked up at the airport when they arrive, and transportation for departure will be arranged as well.

Academics

Participants follow a program of 20 lessons of 45 minutes of English per week, Monday to Friday.  Lesson plans aim to improve English language skills through conversation (role-plays, discussions, etc.), listening and reading exercises and some writing tasks.  In groups for advanced students, the students are introduced into politics or other relevant topics.  Participants will take a placement test upon arrival and will be place in their appropriate level, from beginner to advanced.

Activities

The activity program includes four afternoon activities and one full-day excursion on Saturday to Mosta dome, Ta’Qali Crafts Village, Dingli Cliffs, the Temples and San Anton gardens in the morning and a beach visit in the afternoon.  There are also five evening activities organized (such as a welcome party, a boat cruise to Comino Island with BBQ and music, open-air disco, karaoke and every Saturday a special party evening).
  • Welcome party (each week)
  • Comino Boat Cruise (in the evening)
  • Malta Experience Tour
  • Blue Grotto Tour
  • Visit to Valletta, Mdina, Rabat, ...
  • International Party (each week)
  • Beach walk
  • Theater evening
  • Open-air disco
  • Sports activities such as soccer, beach volley etc.
  • At school there is a possibility to book other sports: bowling, diving, horse riding or tennis.

Accommodation

We offer two primary options for accommodation during this program, host family and student residence.  Our carefully selected host families are all native English speakers who greet our students warmly and provide them with the best possible opportunity to practice their English in a real-world environment.  Most of the host families live around Sliema/St.Julians/Swieqi; others are in the surrounding villages of San Gwann, Msida, Ta/Xbiex, Naxxar, Lija, Balzan and Attard.  Most of the students can walk to school and some make use of the free transportation that school organizes in the morning.

Alternatively, students can opt to stay in one of our residences. We cannot guarantee one residence in particular, but two people who book at the same time will always be able to room together in the same residence.  A € 50 security deposit will be asked on arrival.

Teenagers programs are on a full-board basis (3 meals a day) and the meals are taken at the restaurant of the hotel.
