Spanish Courses in Spain

Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterrenean, Spain has long been one of the great crossroads of the Western world. The country's 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites bear witness to its diverse cultural heritage influenced by Celtic, Roman and Islamic societies. Today, Spain's population of 45 million people inhabit a country spanning landscapes as diverse as they are, from snowy mountains to high plains and, of course, sunny beaches. Famous for their hospitality and love of the night life, the Spaniards provide a welcoming and entertaining environment in which to learn one of the world's most spoken languages.

The Schools

We have partner institutions throughout Spain. Specifically, we offer classes in Alicante, Barcelona, Salamanca, Madrid, Granada, Marbella, Valencia or Sevilla.

Our schools are all of the highest quality, most having been certified by the Instituto Cervantes. Additionally, students who will be studying for longer periods and wish to see a lot of the country can switch between our schools every four weeks for no extra charge (transportation not included).

Many of our centers are accredited to offer university credits in the United States.

Language Courses

Class sizes are small, generally with a maximum of 10 participants and an average of five. We accept students of every ability level, from absolute beginners to advanced speakers and courses begin every Monday. Our programs combine different pedagogical techniques, centered on a communicative approach in order to reach every kind of learner.

We offer four basic programs in our catalogue:

• Intensive or Superintensive Spanish Courses
  These courses, which are available for a duration of 1-12 weeks, consist of 20 or 25 lessons per week of general Spanish, plus 5 hours per week of cultural workshops (see below).
  
  
• Long Duration Course
  Our long duration course (minimum of 12 weeks) follow the same basic framework as our short-duration classes, however the increased duration allows the student to become a truly fluent speaker.
  
  
• DELE Exam Preparation
  The DELE (Diploma for Spanish as a Foreign Language) is the only official certificate for foreign students recognized by the Instituto Cervantes. This diploma is an invaluable asset for students who wish to study at Spanish universitiesor would like to work in a Spanish-speaking country.
  
  This course is designed to prepare you to pass the DELE exam at any of its 3 levels.
  
  
• One on One Spanish
  This option, which we offer only in conjuntion with our other courses, is designed to allow students time with a professor to work on his or her own specific weakness and strengths. This is without a doubt the fastest way to learn Spanish.
  
  

Each lesson is 55 minutes in length.

Cultural Workshops

We believe that learning Spanish involves more than grammar or conversation lessons and that a strong understanding of Spanish culture is essential to communication in the language. Our afternoon cultural workshops are not only intended to serve as opportunities for students to practice their Spanish but also as classes in their own right to impart the basics of Spanish history, art, and mass communication. The four workshops we offer are:

• Spanish Radio: In this workshop, students produce their own radio programme based on national and international newscasts. The class requires students to listen to and collect and summarize information from Spanish broadcast media.
• Press Workshop: In this workshop, students produce their own newspaper/magazine based on news, cultural events, popular traditions. The class requires students to conduct research in the Spanish print media as well as interview locals.
• Drama Workshop: Here, students learn and perform extracts from well known Spanish plays. In addition to the obvious cultural education that this workshop provides, it also aids students in learning to express themselves quickly in idiomatic terms
• History, Literature, and Art: In this workshop, students learn to analyse some of Spain's most famous writers and artists that reflect Spanish history. Students will also discover Spanish customs, gastronomy and popular events.

Accommodation

We offer accommodation in:

• Host Family: Probably one of the most effective ways to practice your language skills outside of class is to stay with a host family while in Spain. Host families also offer an opportunity to see Spanish culture up close and really get to know the country. Our host families will provide bed linen, blankets, laundry once a week and either full or half board depending on student wishes.
• Student Residence: Student residences offer dormitory style living for students who wish to have a more independent lifestyle. Single, double, or triple rooms are available and half or full board is provided depending on student wishes.
• Flat: We offer a variety of accommodation in flats, including flats with double rooms, flats with single rooms, and entirely private appartments. As prices and availability vary widely by location, please contact us directly for more details if you are interested.

Dates

The courses begin on Sunday and end Saturday year-round.

The DELE exam preparation courses begin:

• 4 weeks from 20/04/09, 27/07/09 and 19/10/09.
• 5 weeks from 13/04/09, 20/07/09 and 13/10/09.

DELE exams: 21/11/08, 15/05/09, 21/08/09 and 13/11/09.

Spanish Courses in Alicante

Alicante, situated in the east of Spain near Valencia, in the Heart of the Costa Blanca, is a beautiful city with a beach, an international airport and a population of 290,000 inhabitants. The city is situated between some of the best vineyards of Spain, and the region is famous for its wine and olives. This culturally rich city, founded by the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca in the 3rd century BC, offers stunning panoramas into the Mediterranean Sea from its impressive city walls or the citadel on the rocky butte dominating the area. During the winter, Alicante is one of the most visited cities in Spain and it enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate with 300 sunny days a year. This typical Spanish city is full of charming Mediterranean characteristics, palm trees, blue seas, white beaches. It also has various cultural centers and a lively nightlife you are sure not to forget.

The School

The school was founded in 1973 as an academic institution with highly qualified university teachers with the desire to teach the Spanish language and culture to foreign visitors. Attracting students from more than 30 different countries, the school has a vibrant, international atmosphere. The class sizes are small with maximum of 9 students per class to maximise individual attention and the courses are taught by qualified teachers using current materials and methods. The school has a computer room, lounge area, good sports facilities and a patio garden. It is conveniently located in the city centre, a 5 minute walk from Plaza Mayor. Our centre also offers linguistic exchanges with Spaniards, the use of email, fax, and a library.

The Evaluation Commission of the University of Alcalá Language Department awarded the school the title of "Calidad en la Enseñanza del Español como Lengua Extranjera" CEELE ("Quality in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language") in June 1999.

Excursions and Activities

Alicante offers an interesting range of distractions from art galleries to museums, beach parties to traditional festivals or trekking to windsurfing dance. Local institutions offer classes in flamenco dancing, pottery, or regional cooking. If you should ever desire a change of scenery, nearby picturesque villages such Altea, Denia, Torrevieja, Bendidorm are perfect for a day trip.

In September the city hosts an Open Air-Theatre Festival and an International Contemporary Music Festival; in November, the Contemporary Spanish Theatre Festival and in December, an International Festival of Puppet Shows. All such activities are accessible to our students who are informed of the events which take place in Alicante.

The school organises excursions to nearby villages every Saturday:

• The Route of the Palm Trees: Elche (Basilica of Santa Maria, Priest's orchard, the old Muslim baths and museum of the Mystery) and Orihuela (the Cathedral of El Salvador, the old University of Santo Domingo and the churches of Santiago and Santa Justina).
• The Route of the Castles: Novelda (the sanctuary of La Magdalena, and the castle of La Mola), Sax (the castle) and Villena (The castle of La Atalaya, the Torre del Homenaje, Barrio del Raval and churches of Santa Maria and Santiago).
• The Coastal Route: Calpe (the rock Peñón de Ifach), Altea (the old section of the village and the church) and Benidorm (the balcony of the Mediterranean and beaches).
• The Inland Routes: Guadalest (the Castle), the Algar springs and Canalobre caves.

Barcelona is an extremely cosmopolitan city with a population of about 3 million and is located on the Mediterranean coast. It is found in the heart of the autonomous region of Cataluña, which is one of the richest and most modern regions of Spain. It has always been a city of cutting edge fashion and architecture.

Barcelona successfully combines old and modern. The city is full of famous places of interest such as the "El Barrio Gótico", "Las Ramblas", "La Plaza de Catalunya", "The Olympic port", "Picasso Museum" and the "Miró Foundation". Anyone who visits Barcelona will admire the work of the world famous architect Antonio Gaudi and will also be able to enjoy his stunning work such as Güell Park's "La Pedrera" or "La Sagrada Familia". Our school in Barcelona is located near "Las Ramblas", one of the most emblematic boulevards of Spain. It is a 5 minute walk from the school. There are also 7 bus lines that travel to the school from the most important areas of the city.

The school is located in a magnificent ancient building more than 100 years old, which has been fully restored to meet the needs of a modern school. We offer large common room with a refreshments and coffee machine, a study hall equipped with Internet and e-mail access, as well as a reading room and a well equipped library and video library. Spanish Courses in Granada

Granada is a scenic city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada near the highest peak on the Iberian peninsula and just 45 minutes from the warmest beaches in Europe. Influenced by the multitude of cultures that have had a major presence in the city, from ancient Phoenicians, Romans, and medieval Moors to the 19th century Romantics, Granada offers the visitor a spectacular voyage through time. Each year, thousands of visitors flock to the Alhambra fortress, a mystical Moorish palace dating as far back as the 8th century. Today, it is home to one of Spain's largest Universities with over 60.000 students. As a result, there are plenty of terrace cafés where you can find tapas, or bars with live music and dancing.

The School

The school is located in the historic city centre, within 5 minutes walking distance from the University area and the cathedral and just behind the University's Faculty of Translation housed in an historical palace. The most interesting part of the city and your accommodation are within walking distance. A lively and friendly atmosphere is ensured in this special location.

The capital city of Spain, Madrid has an approximate population of 4 million inhabitants. It is located in the centre of the country and because of this convenient location, getting to any other part of the country is some 5 hours by car.

Madrid is a city full of contrasts where the old city mixes its ancient character with modern architecture. It is an important financial and political city where important events take place every day. All year long, it offers a variety of events such as exhibitions, football matches, concerts, opera, "zarzuela", theatre, cinema, etc. and lively nights out where young people enjoy the many nightclubs present in the city.

The School

The Centre of International Studies in the centre of the city (in a large building just next to the most important Business and Law University of Spain - ICADE ICAI University of Comillas). The school is located in the city centre. It is easily accessible through 9 bus lines and the subway which is only 5 minutes walk away. Marbella is located in the south of Spain in the Andalusian province of Malaga. It has a population of slightly more than 100 000. This city is one of the most exclusive summer resorts in Europe, an old, typical Andalusian town that still preserves its character. It is also close to major cities and legendary cultural centres. Málaga (an important commercial and cultural centre with many historic monuments which attract numerous visitors from all over the world), Granada (with the wonderful Alhambra), and Seville (one of the most popular cities in Spain). Marbella has the typical Andalusian flavour. It is well connected with two near-by international airports: Malaga and Gibraltar.

Marbella is also well known for being the "golfers paradise". You can play golf every day and even at night in the first illuminated golf course in Europe. Marbella is also famous for its breathtaking beaches and blue sea, world-renowned yacht harbours, beautiful landscapes, luxury hotels, shopping centres and vibrant nightlife. The average temperature all year long is 25 degrees Celsius and the sun shines around 320 days.

The madness culminates in the burning of all the caricatures, a truly amazing sight.
